Shakuhachi are named by length in shaku, about 30.3 cm. A longer Shakuhachi plays lower: each extra tenth of a shaku is roughly a half step down. The 1.8 in D is the standard Shakuhachi; long Shakuhachi are deep, slow and meditative.
